When Jovan Shabazz looked at Detroit’s food landscape, he saw more than vacant lots – he saw possibility. Growing up in the city, he understood that true change starts from the ground up. Or in his case, from the water up.
The Shabazz Urban Farm isn’t just another agricultural project. It’s a living, breathing ecosystem right in the heart of the city, where fish swim beneath floating gardens, and sustainability isn’t just a buzzword – it’s our daily practice.
Started as a dream to bring fresh, locally grown food to Detroit’s neighborhoods, our urban farm has evolved into something bigger: a complete aquaponic ecosystem that produces everything from fresh fish to crisp vegetables, aromatic herbs, and even beneficial snails that help keep our system in perfect balance.
But we’re more than just a farm. We’re proof that cities can feed themselves. Our integrated system uses 90% less water than traditional farming, while producing food year-round in Detroit’s challenging climate. The fish provide nutrients for the plants, the plants clean the water for the fish, and our community gets access to fresh, chemical-free food right in their backyard.
Every head of lettuce, every fish, and every snail that leaves our farm carries with it Jovan’s vision: that sustainable urban agriculture isn’t just possible – it’s essential. We’re showing that you don’t need acres of rural land to be a farmer. Sometimes, all you need is a vision, some determination, and a willingness to think differently about how we grow our food.
Visit us to see where your food comes from, learn about aquaponics, or just to say hello. We believe that when you know your farmer, you know your food. And here at Urban Aqua Farms Detroit, we’re growing more than just food – we’re growing a healthier, more sustainable Detroit, one harvest at a time.
